Bunk beds make a fine addition to the bedroom for kids. Kids just love kids bunk beds. They can be so much fun.

Just add a sheet to the top bunk and you've got a castle, or a dungeon, or a pirate ship, or anything else kids want it to be.

And for parents bunks are a godsend. The kids love them so you've got no problems there, and they allow you to make much better use of the space in the bedroom, and even put 2 kids into a bedroom when it would be pretty hard to do if you used 2 single beds. 2 single beds take up way too much space, and they aren't any fun, so no incentive for the kids to share a room.

So for parents and kids there is a big upside to bunk beds.

But there is also a downside. Bunkbeds can be a little dangerous if used wrong, and kids can use them wrong. They can fall out of a bunk and hurt themselves.

Of course if they fall from the bottom bunk no problems, it's only about 8 inches from the floor. But if they fall from the top bunk then yes, there can be problems. There can be serious injuries suffered by kids in a fall like this.

And kids have also been known to fall between the railing (a must have on the top bunk) and the mattress, or even hang from the corner post when their pajamas get caught.

So learn a few simple things, and do a little research on bunk bed safety.

All bunk beds should have a fixed solid railing around the open sides, even better if it's around all the top bunk, as kids can fall between the mattress and the wall. The top of the railing should be at least 6 to 8 inches from the mattress, and there should be no more than about 3 inches between the bottom of the railing and the top of the mattress.

And make sure the mattress fits the bunk bed properly, some do not if the wrong mattress has been used on the bed.

Make sure corner posts are not sticking up in the air to catch clothing.

And make sure the slats that the mattress rests on are fixed in place. Some are not and if a child pushes from underneath with his or her feet the mattress, bedding, sheets and pillows and the child on the top bunk can fall onto the child on the bottom bunk.

If used properly, bunks can be a stack of fun for kids, and great for parents. If used properly.
